The South Bay, California is a popular and admired vacation destination in United States. The Ghost Towns of Georgia

Georgia like the other eastern states is usually short-shifted in ghost towns. However, there are a lot of locations worth looking into. Especially in the northern reaches of the state where gold mining occurred.

So, now lets us discuss about some of the very famous ghost towns in Georgia.

1. Allatoona
Allatoona was a town located in extreme southeastern Bartow County, Georgia. Built along Allatoona Creek, it was a gold mining area later in the first U.S. gold rush. The town was destroyed in the late 1940s when the new Lake Allatoona flooded it, making the creek into its major southern arm.

2. Skull Shoals
Scull Shoals is an extinct town on the Oconee River in middle Georgia, site of a 19th century mill village which included Georgia’s first paper mill from 1811-1814. Flooding caused the demise of the mills in the 1880s, and the town was abandoned by the 1920s.

3. Ebenezer
Ebenezer is a ghost town in Effingham County, Georgia, United States, along the banks of Ebenezer Creek. It was established in 1734 by 150 Salzburger Protestants who had been expelled from Salzburg by edict.

4. Auraria
This was in Cherokee Indian territory, and part of present day Lumpkin County, Georgia. Settlers came in the Indian lands searching for gold during the ensuing Georgia Gold Rush. There are still a few old buildings standing: the collapsing Graham Hotel, a store that remained open till the early 1980s, a red house that was once a bank, another house across the street from that, and a couple of foundations. They stand in lone testament to the 19th century gold rush.

5. Burton
The town of Burton, Georgia now lies underwater, covered by Lake Burton. The town was located at the confluence of Dicks Creek and the Tallulah River in Rabun County, Georgia and was established in the first half of the 1800s as a result of the Georgia Gold Rush. The dam for Lake Burton was closed on December 22, 1919 and before long the town was submerged.

6. Dahlonega
It is the site of the nation’s first gold rush. Was founded by the 29er’s in 1829. Dahlonega and its Sister Auraria where two of the first boom town found in America however most of the mining stopped in 1849 and picked back up in 1880 but has steadily declined since 1915.

7. Plunkett Town

8. Campbelleton
It was the original county seat for Campbell County, Georgia until after it refused to allow the Atlanta & West Point Railroad line though, on account of the anticipated noise. It faded away as nearby Fairburn grew, that becoming the second and final seat from 1870 through the end of 1931. Campbell then became part of Fulton as of 1932.

9. Kenwood
Kenwood was a very thriving town through the 1800’s and into the early 1900’s. Slowly the town was abandoned except for a few people who are currently living there. Old mill, abandoned houses and stores still exists.

10. Mountain View
Mountain View is an unincorporated area in northwest Clayton County, Georgia, United States. It is bounded on the east and south by Forest Park, on the north by the Fulton County line, and on the west by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Formerly a city, the area was dis-incorporated and most of the population moved away due to its proximity to Atlanta’s airport.

11. Andersonville
Between 1864 and 1865 13,000 Union prisoners died at the Andersonville prison during the Civil War. This has been named a National Historical Site.

12. Fort McAllister
This fort, built in 1861, is important as the end of Sherman’s destructive march and infamous “March to the Sea” during the Civil War. The fort resisted a bombardment from iron clad Union ships until Sherman’s arrival in 1864.
